Like many authors I’ve communicated with Raylan
McCrae has a fondness for a first effort – the first of his
Lucas Wade series JUST COMPENSATION.
Lone gunfighter Lucas Wade finds the town of New Market under the control of
powerful rancher Clement Hastings. Hastings is seeking to grab land around the
town, ousting small ranchers and settlers like Harvey Bell. But Bell’s wife
Angie is an old flame of Lucas's so he finds himself drawn into the conflict.
He even finds himself galvanising the townsfolk to stand against the would-be
tyrant.
The storyline of a lone gunfighter helping a man and his wife
against a powerful land-grabber naturally brought SHANE to mind.
Scenes from SHANE (1953):
But Lucas Wade revisiting an old flame, now married, also made
me think of an interesting ‘psychological’ western THE LAST SUNSET.
