Multi-award
winning author PATRICK DEAREN (winner of The Spur Award, amongst others) tells
me his favourite of his western novels is WHEN COWBOYS DIE. This tells of a
1970s cowboy who goes on the run from the law. It’s based on a true story of a
cowboy who seemed to want to emulate the deeds of Kirk Douglas in the great
1962 movie LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, one of my favourite ‘western’ movies. Life
imitating art!

book has everything: action, adventure, superb characterization, vivid
dialogue, a strong sense of place, and a plot that will seize your heart and
not let it go until the last page… an instant classic.’
‘Departs intriguingly from
classic western form . . . . A tale of a cowboy born 100 years too late and of
his desperate run from the law.’
‘Bright and poignant . . . . A sharply drawn and memorable novel.’
‘A spellbinding tale of the modern world against the last cowboy.’
‘If you're a western fan and have

‘A great read, that leaves the
reader on the edge of his seat the entire time.’

Thanks so much. WHEN COWBOYS DIE has been optioned by Turnpike Pictures, which hopes to film the movie at the site of the 1976 manhunt in West Texas.
ReplyDeleteGreat Patrick. Good luck with that. It would be great to see a book inspired by a true story that was inspired by a film - turned back into a film!
